Today, the California High School Transit Alliance (CalHSTA), an alliance of high school clubs and student organizations focusing on issues of transportation and mobility, announced a slate of public transit “speedrun” events on September 14th, 2025.

The first ever “California Speedrun Day” will consist of two celebrations – one in the Bay Area and one in San Diego – in which California high school students and community members will attempt to visit every station on the BART and San Diego Trolley networks in the fastest possible time. “BART and the Trolley are vital economic engines for our state, and best-in-class rail networks nationwide. But to mark Transit Month, we wanted to focus on how fun and exciting they can be to ride,” according to CalHSTA president David Rabinovich.

The BART group will meet at Millbrae Transit Station on the Upper Concourse at 9:40 AM. The run is expected to take approximately six hours, with the current TransitRuns record for the system standing at 5 hours 30 minutes.

The San Diego Trolley group will meet at UTC Transit Center on track 1 at 1:35 PM. The run is expected to take approximately four hours, with the current TransitRuns record for the system standing at 3 hours 53 minutes.

“When the San Diego Trolley opened in 1981, it kicked off a nationwide light rail revolution. BART redefined what a truly modern heavy rail network could look like. This Transit Month, CalHSTA is proud to celebrate two transformative California systems in a way that’s fun, engaging, and optimistic. We hope all community members consider coming along for the ride,” according to Samuel Sharp, a staff advisor to CalHSTA and scheduler for the San Diego Trolley speedrun.

These events are part of the monthlong Bay Area Transit Month and San Diego Transit Month celebrations, intended to highlight the importance of public transit across California at a time when many systems across the state are in financial peril due to growing ridership yet limited funding.
